The Westminster Schools

Evaluation of STEAM Integration

The Opportunity: Westminster is an independent school that provides leading-edge programs and unique experiences to spark students' creativity, passion and curiosity. The Westminster Middle School received a multi-year grant from the Goizueta Foundation to integrate science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics into student learning.  Using design-thinking methodology, the school developed a STEAM integration approach utilizing teacher professional learning cohorts, an innovation space for applied and hands-on learning, and “mobile” innovation labs for use within classrooms.  GSG was engaged to evaluate the implementation of the STEAM integration initiative.

Our Services: The focus of evaluation for the initiative included installation of a lab equipped with technology and physical construction tools, in addition to support for cohorts of teachers integrating STEAM in cross-curricular projects. GSG assessed the implementation through:

  • observations

  • teacher surveys

  • student ratings of lab experiences

  • teacher and student focus groups

  • conversations with project coordinators

  • tracking of program data.

Results: Through iterative data collection and engagement with school and project leaders, continuous feedback led to incremental program improvements over the course of implementation.
