Strategic Plan Development

The Opportunity: Pittsburgh Public Schools serves approximately 25,000 students in kindergarten through grade 12 in 54 schools. The student population is 53% African American, 33% White, and 14% Other, speaking 46 languages representing 57 countries. Following the appointment of a new superintendent, GSG was engaged to support district leadership in developing a strategic plan.

Our Services: GSG supported the strategic planning process through design and implementation of an extensive, iterative community engagement process including forums, focus groups, and surveys.  Specific strategic planning consultation included:

  • Analyzed data on district performance and developed presentations for the board and community

  • Reviewed and integrated recommendations from a district operational review by the Council of Great City Schools

  • Facilitated a strategy design session of more than100 district leaders to develop the key elements of a future strategic direction

  • Developed a process for testing the strategic direction among all stakeholders, including training district staff as session facilitators, and reviewing and categorizing all input

  • Trained and supported staff teams to develop detailed action plans for a set of priority strategic initiatives

  • Developed a monitoring process for district leadership to guide and support implementation.
