Computing Research Association

The Opportunity: The Computing Research Association (CRA), is an international non-profit, membership-based organization that serves the computing research community in North America. Current membership includes more than 200 higher education departments of computer science, information, and computer engineering; as well as government and industry laboratories and research centers.  The association had never had a strategic plan and the incoming Board Chair made this a priority. GSG was selected to lead this work.

Our Services:

  • GSG facilitated a steering committee of current and former board members to draft the strategic plan and supported approval by the entire Board of Directors.  The steering committee members included major academic institutions including MIT and Georgia Tech, and technology companies including Microsoft.

  • To gather insight on the future computing research landscape, GSG conducted focus groups and interviews with leading technology researchers representing major academic institutions as well as the National Science Foundation (NSF), White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and industry research labs.

  • GSG team facilitated discussions among the 35-member CRA board to support strategic plan design.

  • Following the design of a draft strategic plan, GSG presented the plan and facilitated input with the entire CRA membership during over a 2-day virtual conference.

The Results: An overview of the strategic plan is available here.
